Homemade Taco Seasoning

Happy Friday, friends!!
I am at Haven blogging conference this weekend, but I'm reposting something that I make all the time at our house! Hope you try it. It is so easy and delish!

Have a great weekend!

I have been wondering lately why I EVER bought pre-packaged taco seasoning?!

Seriously! What a total rip off! Not to mention that it usually contains MSG, and other things that I no longer wish to feed my family.
I can whip up a batch of tacos with homemade seasoning, complete with rice and beans in under 30 minutes. And, my family loves it!

I have seen many versions of homemade taco seasoning on Pinterest, but I adapted mine from a blog that I follow. Click here to get Amy's recipe on her blog. I have omitted and changed just a few things in her recipe to suit my taste.

Gather your supplies...
Spices, a small bowl, and measuring spoons.

I like to use Organic spices when I can, otherwise, I usually buy most of them at Trader Joes.

Here is the recipe I use... (after adapting the one on Amy's blog, New Nostalgia.)

Homemade Taco Seasoning

1 Tablespoon Chili Powder
1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes.
(I use closer to 1/8 so it won't be too spicy for the little guy.)
1/4 teaspoon Dried Oregano
1/4 teaspoon Dried Parsley
1 1/2 teaspoons Ground Cumin
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

Combine dry ingredients in a small bowl and mix to combine.
Use 3 Tablespoons per 1 pound ground turkey or ground beef.

I usually double the recipe, so I have enough to use for the dinner that I am making, and another batch mixed up that I can store in an extra spice bottle.

Amy suggests quadrupling the recipe and storing the mix in a small mason jar.
I don't need to have quite that much on hand, and I don't mind mixing up a new batch every other time, so I just double it.

I use corn tortillas for our family, because of my celiac disease. Sometimes soft tacos, and other times hard shells...it depends on our mood.

I use ground turkey for my tacos, and serve them with cilantro lime rice, and organic black beans.

Super Yum!

I also managed to clean out my spice drawer while I was at it.
That always makes me so happy.
I love order.
:-)

Hope you get a chance to try making the homemade taco seasoning yourself! Trust me, you will never want to buy it again!

Have a fantastic week!

  2. I hear ya sister...I've been using Pampered Chef spices (no preservatives or MSG for years) and I make my own fresh salsa (tastes SO much better than the jar) and I'm making my own Steel Cut Oatmeal in the slow cooker tonight for breakfast tomorrow. I'll have to grab the tortillas the next time I'm @ Trader Joes :) Take care! Kathy

  5. I love Trader Joe's and go there every week. I haven't seen the corn and wheat tortillas, but will have to see if our store carries them. Your taco seasoning looks great. I make mine with some of the same ingredients.
